A Message from the President
Dear UIU Family, Prospective Students, and Parents,
Welcome to Upper Iowa University! It is an honor and privilege to serve as the 20th President of this fine university. I am particularly pleased to serve at this time in the school’s rich history. This is an ascending institution, embodying the character and virtue of a traditional, private liberal arts university while providing greater access to higher education through its extension activities and the use of technology. Upper Iowa University proudly provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs to a culturally diverse community of learners around the globe, in a variety of delivery styles, without losing sight of its rich heritage and compromising the character and quality of its curriculum.
For almost 155 years, men and women have looked to Upper Iowa University in search of their dreams. It is no wonder that Upper Iowa University has produced a long and distinguished list of alumni that includes John R. Mott, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize; David B. Henderson, the first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives west of the Mississippi River; Dr. Arlie V. Bock, called the founding father of sports medicine because of his research into the physiological effects of exercise; and William Andres, a founder of Target stores, a Fortune 500 Company; just to name a few. We are a lifelong partner to those who strive for excellence and success in a complex and ever-changing world.
In the early 1970s, Upper Iowa University launched its external degree programs, becoming one of the first in the United States. Today, the University has over 20 centers and campuses abroad in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. We strive to be a critical partner and leader in higher education, workforce and economic development, community outreach and partnership development. Our mission is to prepare global citizens through multiple delivery systems face to face, correspondence as well as independent study.
Without question, Upper Iowa University has a team of excellent faculty and staff members that is dedicated and committed to the students. Whether you walk around the Fayette campus or any of our domestic and international centers, talk to our students, faculty and staff, or take a virtual tour, you will notice there is a sense of pride, vision, and optimism at Upper Iowa University. As the largest private/independent university in Iowa, the only institution in Iowa to play Division II athletics, and with our growing portfolio of degrees from the certificate and associate’s level through the master’s level, we have a very bright future before us.
